TV: 2008 Winter Schedule

*** I have the flu. Hope to be back Wed.***

"I've gathered a complete listing of all of the TV Season Premiers for Winter 2008 for you. This list includes all the new premiers for the major TV Networks (broadcast and cable) in the U.S."

"NIELSEN LATE FRIDAY ANNOUNCED TIME frames for two major data initiatives, including a new "enhanced weighting" procedure that has the potential of generating differences in ratings estimates effective with the next television season. In that latter initiative, Nielsen said it will revise the algorithms it uses to weight national ratings beginning in September 2008, and that the revision would likely have an effect on both program and average commercial minute audience estimates."

TV Moments: 2007

"But what about those moments in your favorite (or even not-so-favorite) shows that pretty much made you swallow your tongue with shock or fall off the sofa with laughter? What about those singular moments that just left you sitting where you were, long after the credits rolled, saying, “WTF?” And how about those moments that just made you mad.

Your friends here at Remote Access wracked our brains for the moments that most shocked, amused, confused and infuriated us over the past year."

Great writeup about Mimi and the chicken and more.

"It's been pretty quiet due to the Holidays, so I've had time to think about the Save the Dresden Files Campaign, to look back on all we've done in 2007...and to wonder how in the world I got so involved!

If anyone had asked me at this time last year about how I planned on spending 2007, I can say with complete certitude that helping run a campaign to save a television show would not have been on the list."

"The Nielsen Company and HBO recently announced that Nielsen will begin measuring the programming available on HBO's subscription video on demand (SVOD) services – HBO On Demand and Cinemax on Demand – making HBO the first company to receive television ratings for its on-demand offerings."

Jericho Rocks at RemoteAccess

Check out this article by Amy at Remote Access.

Jericho, Margie and Edna, and much more.

" I've been the only person around to suggest that Jericho's revival had less to do with angry and persistent fans as it did the uncertain landscape which the networks and studios find themselves.

The strike was looking extremely likely well before the authorization vote was called, and I think it is past the time that we put some serious weight behind the possibility that CBS brought back a limited run of new Jericho episodes as a backup plan to mitigate some of the strike damage.

And now it occurs to me that if CBS holds Jericho back until the other shows start running out of scripts and everyone is forced to start showing reruns and a flood of new reality programming, CBS will be one of the only places in town that has original programming to air - and good stuff at that, in Jericho.

This brings a much greater potential for eyeballs with no other new programming anywhere on TV that isn't reality garbage, it could give those limited number of Jericho episodes a rating unlike any the show has ever seen before. It's really a shame and I'm sure CBS is cursing itself for not ordering more episodes, because if this is the scenario that plays out, those seven episodes aren't going to last very long."

"Since the early 1940’s the television and advertising industries have relied on Nielsen Media Research to measure the popularity and success of television programming. Nielsen continues to be the leading provider of this information and their list of the top TV shows by demographic are consistently highlighted in the media and watched closely by Advertisers and the Television Networks. While I’m still interested in what Nielsen is reporting as the top shows, I’m left wanting more."

HeyNielsen: Buzz Or Metric

Rich of Copywrite Ink discusses HeyNielsen with comments on Jericho.

"It took less than a day for fans to see what Hey! Nielsen really is — a social network that asks “users” (a word that is well past its prime) to pile into the school gymnasium and have a shouting match. Those with the biggest lungs win. And those with the most outrageous comments get the most attention."

"Hey! Nielsen--What's the Metric?"

"Moreover, the Hey! Nielsen Score is somewhat opaque - we're not sure what's going into it or how it's quantified and weighted to come up with a single number, something that Nielsen addresses somewhat sarcastically on the site. I actually don't think the site is about that one number or the rankings within the different categories."

"One Week Later: Hey! Nielsen Reflections"

"The difference between opinions, comments and ratings within the system has never been well explained, and is not a distinction that is able to be easily translated to fanbases eager to express their support for their show of choice."

"Nielsen Media Research said Thursday that it will consider whether to spike the new ratings rule that this week will allow NBC to add to its "Heroes" audience without reporting an hour in primetime.

When the change took effect Monday with the new TV season, some in the network business cried foul over the fact that NBC would be able to add the unduplicated audience from Saturday's exact replay of "Heroes" to the Monday ratings. The outcry wasn't so much about NBC taking advantage of the rule change but instead that the move would throw the Nielsen daily and weekly programming ratings into question and rate NBC this week on a less-than-22-hour primetime week."

"Ratings, Kid Nation and Jericho"
by Amy Vernon
"Let’s face it. There’s more than enough “reality” television out there. OK, I’m willing to let Kid Nation run a couple more weeks, give it time to get traction. But if Kid Nation can’t survive with all the buzz there was out there for it, let’s bring back Jericho before all its buzz starts to dissipate and fade away."

The Jericho Impact

Jake Green says, " I'll show you impact."

"Online impact is a factor in series planning"

" “The ability to maintain a strong online presence is now critical to getting a series picked up as well as its long-term viability,” says Jeffrey Stepakoff, author of TV memoir Billion Dollar Kiss: The Kiss That Saved Dawson’s Creek And Other Adventures in TV Writing and a former writer on Dawson’s, one of the first series to interact with fans online.

“TV shows were picked up this season specifically for how well they could be repurposed and expanded on the Internet,” he says.

“Many of these shows have entire narrative worlds which exist between episodes on television. Look at Jericho. And these shows drive huge amounts of traffic to the parent sites.”

Jericho: Firefly to Veronica Mars

" How To Advocate For A Threatened TV Show"

"Plenty of TV shows get canceled. Some of those have an incredibly loyal fanbase who, upon announcement of a show’s impending doom, leap into action to try to rescue the show. This almost never happens, and can be a lot of wasted energy. After all, it’s only a TV show. Popular examples include Jericho, Firefly and My So-Called Life.

Jericho is a rare, partial exception to the ‘dead show walking’ syndrome."

"Hey! Nielsen: Giving Voice to Internet Fandom"

"Users are able to do three things:

* Post their own opinions about TV Shows, Movies, Celebrities, Music and Internet sites like Jericho Monster or TelevisionWithoutPity.
* React to other people’s opinions and post comments about their agreement/disagreement.
* Rate each TV Show/Movie/etc. based on their own preference so people can view their profile and get an idea of their personal taste."

Hey Nielsen Opens Monday

"Nielsen: Broadcast Plugs Up; Cable Down"

"Nielsen plans more electronic meters"

"Nielsen Co. plans to introduce electronic 'local people meters' to 38 more markets by 2011, bringing the total to 56, or about 70 percent of U.S. households, the media researcher said Thursday."

Hey Nielsen!

is a new online community that launches Monday from a somewhat unexpected player – The Nielsen Company – best known for its research reports and statistics like the Nielsen NetRatings. However, once you take a look at the site, it’s pretty clear how the service fits into the company’s main business, and it’s an interesting play.

Coming Monday!
