Engaged Consumers

"If you have been following the postings of Rich Becker at Copywrite Ink then you will know he talks a lot about metrics and measurement. In one recent article Rich says,"The debate seems endless. The argument circular. And the affirmation echoes apparently tied to technologies like Google PageRank, Technorati authority, Alexa traffic, Feedburner subscriptions, Facebook friends, Twitter followers, return visitors, comment counts, and any combination of the aforementioned."

Rich is the reason I found this article to be of interest:

"As media companies have come to recognize the value of participatory audiences, they have searched for matrixes by which to measure engagement with their properties. A model based on impressions is giving way to new models which seek to account for the range of different ways consumers engage with entertainment content. But nobody is quite clear how you can “count” engaged consumers or how you can account for various forms and qualities of engagement. Over the past several years, a range of different companies have proposed alternative systems for measuring engagement. What are the strengths and limits of these competing models? What aspects of audience activity do they account for? What value do they place on different forms of engagement?"

In one section I found this quote: "SLS - Engagement is the beginning of that. Trying to determine how much people like a show based on how much they talk about it. When Lost first was being talked about, everyone thought it wasn’t going to work - but our analysis of buzz said that it was going to work. In that case it turned out to be right. But there are also small, highly engaged audiences in some cases - Veronica Mars, The Office, Friday Night Lights - these are shows which ranked very high in buzz, but small in audience. The small engaged fan cultures are something we should be looking at. We also can’t forget that consumers are themselves channels - they are distributing content as well."

Go take a look. What do you think?

Jericho Updates and Reruns

Fan Central has been updated.

Thanks, CBS, for adding my other two blogs but you listed this one as Annabelle's Alley instead of Arabelle's. Sure would appreciate it if you could fix it.

I have also started a Wiki called Everything Jericho. Just another way to spread the word. I can't do it alone so feel free to go over and add anything Jericho you like. Let's make it nice and fill it up.

Jericho Survival Guide From Buddy TV

Sidekick--Jericho Videos and more. Really nice.

Aww! Another Nielsen Error.
"In South Africa, Nielsen Media Research has uncovered anomalies in its print adspend data going back to January, which have resulted in advertising spend being overstated for both newspapers and magazines."
No, this isn't TV but it does serve as another example of Nielsen error.

If You Were Nina Tassler: Part II

I posed this question to the CBS message board yesterday:

"Pretend that you are Nina Tassler for a moment.
What would you be doing to promote Jericho?"

I continue to get responses so there will be more tomorrow. Everyone will be heard. Now if we could just get CBS to pay attention. If you have ideas please leave a comment. We will be heard.

1. "Stop messing with the Friday nite schedules!" *** Don't mess with Jericho either!"

2. "Definitely more Promos and commercials. It was encouraging early on when it actually looked like CBS was going to follow through on their promise to do their part. But now I see NOTHING that leads me to believe they are going to do what they said they would do...How can we keep asking new viewers to invest time and commit to a show that they have already cancelled once, when they can see nothing of CBS's effort to make it work a second time? *** True.***
My friends are reluctant to take a chance at being "gut shot and left for dead" like I was when CBS cancelled Jericho the first time."

3. "Exterminate football!"*** CBS would get Nuts from everywhere for this.***

4. "I would advertise in movie theatres during the trailers. I went and saw Bourne Ultimatum last night and most people were there 20-30 minutes early and sat in the theater watching the commercials before the movie - talk about a captive audience! : ) There were several ads for televisions shows that were more like long trailers for movies. If you do that during a hit movie, you will certainly reach a large number of people and it can't be more expensive than television time."

5. "On Friday nights through the summer - I would have put up "double header" episodes (two each night back to back) of Jericho to get through the entire season and not leap forward.
I would work out a deal with Oprah to get Lennie James on her show.
I would have released the DVD for season one in Sept., not Oct 2.
I would try to see if Jericho fans are like Trekies to the point other projects off the theme of Jericho is possible, even if it's not in prime time. Clearly the future is more and more channels, and I presume we will see in essence some CBS2, CBS3 type stuff, similar to ESPN which is the running joke for that. Look at Star Trek - New Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Enterprise, and how many movies? Besides New Bern, might be interesting to play off what life is like in other areas with spin offs. Prime time? Maybe not, or not at first, but there's a fan base for this.
I would sieze the moment to reach out and understand this Jericho fan movement even more and explore the alternative venues used by Jericho fans, such as blog radio, and consider the revenue potential of that, esp. in combination of the internet broadcasting technologies CBS has acquired. Why not seek to be cutting edge and "try out" more and more new ideas with these Jericho fans.
I would have a liason set up to hear and review the highlights of what's going on with Jericho fans through the forums, and of course, the Coalition. I would reach out even more to Shaun O'Mac and see if that isn't something where some advertising revenue could be generated, esp. if given a little promotion."

6. "If I were in charge at CBS, I would definitely not monkey around with the schedule. If I'm telling the fanbase of Jericho to go out and promote the re-runs, then I would absolutely be more consistent about when those re-runs were on. (How can you keep viewers, especially for summer re-runs, if you pre-empt the show?) Of course, I also would have shown all of the Jericho re-runs, not used the re-cap show to take the place of a block of ten or so episodes." *** You rock.***

7. "We are promoting Jericho and getting new viewers, and CBS is letting us down with pre-emptions and lack of promotion for this GREAT show. Get consistant with the re-runs, and if you must pre-empt, at least give the viewers a heads-up on that and show some previews of the next episode. PLEASE have a Jericho Marathon and promote, promote PROMOTE it. The only reason I can think of that anyone would not get completely hooked on the show is because they don't know about it, because it is not being properly promoted on the network. You have a potential goldmine here with viewer suppport..... you have made history with the 'Save Jericho' campaign that came about on this website....The website is nominated for an emmy.... use these things to your advantage, CBS and make promoting this show a priority instead of teasing us along with a few episodes now and then. I don't think WE will let you down."

8. "PLEASE Nina, don't break our hearts again."
*** I second that emotion."
To be continued tomorrow, Nina. Free help urges you to promote more.***

Comic Con Recap and Monster Interview

CCI XTRA: "JERICHO" SAYS THANK YOU TO FANS:
Fantastic recap of Jericho at Comic-Con

A Monster Fan Interview: Skeeterbit
Get to know Jericho Ranger Skeeterbit

"Networks make it easy to catch up on your favorite shows on the Web
Last weekend I spent 23 hours watching the entire "Jericho" series. I watched the episodes on CBS.com, streamed live into my Web browser."

"Is CBS trying to resurrect or destroy Jericho? The finely tuned science fiction series, starring Skeet Ulrich, is back on CBS's schedule but only after viewers mounted a mighty protest. Now Jericho is back for the summer but for only 13 episodes – a sort of "best of" test. At least this time Jericho isn't up against American Idol. But to build a bigger fan base the series needs careful promotion and putting it on Fridays is simply wacky; this is the least watched night of the year. In fact, rumour has Jericho moving into Moonlight's 9 p.m. time slot anyway come fall and very soon: Moonlight's a real stinker and should last for only a few weeks (CBS at 9)."

BlogStraightTalk

Blog StraightTalk On Bumpzee
Next Mon. (Aug. 6)
"BlogStraightTalk is a weekly discussion on the best and worst of blogging content practices, presented in a contrarian format (eg. Ebert & Roper or Kornheiser & Wilbon).

We'll alternate the discussion between best/worst concepts and blogs (or social media) reviews. The basic concept is to open up a discussion among experienced bloggers while allowing those who are newer to social media to gain insights into content development.

Anyone can join as a member of the community and participate in the discussion. Members who have established blogs (with at least 10 posts that positively contribute to the development of social media) may be added to the blog roll."
They let me join so come on. Let's have a full house.

Jericho Coalition Fan Club Development

This is an invitation to all members of all the Jericho forums to participate in the building of a "fan club" as you, the fans, want.

The general concept behind all this is: everyone has a say.

To summarize:

1. Each forum has selected 5-10 members to represent the forum's membership.

Those forums are:

* CBS
* Jericho Rally Point (JRP)
* Radio Free Jericho (RFJ)
* Nuts For Jericho (NFJ)
* Internet Movie Database (IMDB)

2. At each forum, all questions regarding a fan club will be posted and comments from the members will be collected by the reps of that forum and taken to the Jericho Coalition board.
The Coalition is not the Fan Club. Only the reps will be registered but anyone may view the discussions going on at any time.

3. Jericho Coalition is a site set up for the reps to meet, post the questions and feedback from the fans and then discuss each question in detail. This will allow the input from all the fans to be heard through their representatives via their message boards. Obviously, if you are a member of more than one board – you have multiple opportunities to make your opinions known.

4. After everyone’s input, and discussion, the reps will vote and the final tally will be reported. Eventually a board of directors and officers will be selected from the representatives by either the representatives or by the individual board memberships.

5. This process is repeated until all questions from you, the fans, are answered satisfactorily and decided on, a Board of Directors elected and fan club finalized.

The entire purpose of this is to have you, the fans, be a part of a great thing. We all worked together to bring Jericho back, and we can all work together to build a fan club, for and by everyone.

The links to all the forums are as follows:

CBS
JRP
RFJ
NFJ

IMDB

Right now we are looking for initial questions as to how fans would like to see the Fan Club structured. The idea is to get all the questions out there and answered as best as possible so the brainstorming fun can start right away.

Going in we want everyone at peace with any lingering intitial questions or confusions so we can start rolling out the great ideas from everyone here as soon as possible.

To many of us this is new, but we are all fans and this is a wonderful opportunity to have our voices heard in the Development of a Fan Club, being developed for us, and by us for a show we all truly have a passion for.

Take some time over the weekend and google some fan club sites, surf around and take in of some things that you might like to see in this club. (no, I am not suggesting copyright infringement). Just see what these clubs offer their fans/members that pop up to you as being different, inviting, or even just "hey that's interesting". Think how any of these things might work in a fan made Jericho Fan Club. See something great, save the link, we'll all want to take a look and enjoy the idea with you.

Dues, Merchandise and Promotion are the main topic threads we'll be starting in order to solicit ideas from all over this board and we truly hope everyone loads us up with whatever they choose to throw out there.

Do you want to pay dues? Have both free and paying memberships? Would you want Jericho merchandise available for sale? How do you think the club should be promoted?

Let us know all your ideas and suggestions. They're all important.

Link Popularity and Page Rank

Bill Platt has written a great article about called The Roller Coaster of Link Popularity. I read messages every day about people who want it but don't know how to get it. Bill explains that
link popularity is basically a count of how many web pages point to one of your web pages.

Often associated with link popularity is Page Rank. People are confused about this one too. Page Rank is the value Google gives to every web page on the Net.
Bill lists 12 possible rankings although I won't mention them all here.

"PageRank (PR) is a Google tool that expands on the simplest link popularity calculation. PageRank is a value given to every web page on the Internet, with 12 possible rankings." Here's an example:
PR0 means the page has been added to Google's database but the page has no rank. To get ranked you need pages of higher PR linked to it.

Read the article to learn more about links, traffic, and PR. Bill also discusses
"the inner-workings of what is happening to their link popularity and search engine placements."
Be sure to read his take on Press Releases, article marketing, and Google's Main Index and Supplemental Listings. I found the article to be quite informative.
