Marketing Television

"Sixty-two percent of marketers believe traditional TV ads have become less effective during the last two years. Given that belief, it's no surprise that close to half of them already have experimented with other ad formats that work with digital video recorders or video-on-demand programs. And more than 50% of marketers reported that when half of all TV households use DVRs, they will cut spending on TV advertising by 12%.

Eighty-seven percent of advertisers believe branded entertainment is the key to TV advertising in the coming year, and 65% of them are eager to try ads in online TV shows."

"To CW Network:
We, the undersigned fans, want Supernatural renewed for a 4th season. Supernatural makes Thursday nights one of the best nights on TV. We love this show too much to let it go off the air without a fight.

Please sign this petition and show your support for a Supernatural Season 4. Send it to your friends, family, co-workers, put the petition widget on your MySpace and FaceBook page. Let's not see another great show become a memory."

Supernatural Returns January 31

"Last week, I wrote about several series that are either returning or coming back over the next few months. There were some that I didn’t mention because I didn’t have confirmation that they were returning and when. One of those is Supernatural, one of the best series running these days. I’m happy to report that The CW has confirmed that Supernatural will return with new episodes on January 31st. There won’t be many new episodes though because creator Eric Kripke mentions in an interview with TV.com that they were only able to complete 12 episodes of season 3 before having to stop production due to the writer’s strike. Since we’ve already seen 8 of those episodes, which aired last fall, we only have four more to look forward to and I don’t think the strike is going to over within the next month. So, will these 12 be all we get for this season?"

Supernatural

"We've got your first look at the TV commercial for the upcoming episode of Supernatural, airing on Thursday, January 31st."

"From the moment the CW announced the news that SUPERNATURAL was being sent to hell ? and by hell we naturally mean taken off the schedule ? this TV Addict’s inbox has been flooded with emails. There have been angry emails, disappointed fans and more than a few sentiments that are not surprisingly ? considering how passionate the fan base is ? suitable for public consumption. Yet regardless of tone, the most common question being posed is “what does this mean for my favorite show?”"

Jericho And Supernatural

From a Supernatural fan:

"I finally finished watching all of "Jericho" (yay DVDs for Christmas yay). I really like it, and Skeet Ulrich isn't making me roll my eyes like he was in the first couple of episodes. In fact, I like his character quite a lot now. And, surprise surprise! My OTP thus far is Stanley/Mimi, 'cause how cute are they? I haven't had a het OTP since, oh, X-Files Mulder/Scully. Odd thing is, so far I'm not seeing a lot of potential hoyay in this series, which is sorta sad. Possibly Jake/Stanley, actually, now that I think of it. Ooh, or Robert/Jake. I'm looking forward to new Jericho eps in February, whoot! Also, I need Jericho icons. And Jericho fanfic...are there comms for this?"

It's Supernatural

"There aren't many shows that could largely reinvent themselves in their third seasons and come out on top. That would require almost, ahem, "Supernatural" intervention.

And yet The CW's Thursday-night (8 p.m., Ch. 30) action/horror/thriller/comedy has done just that. It's better than ever.

For those of you who haven't checked the series out, "Supernatural" began as the story of brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), whose mother was killed by a demon when they were very young. Their father, John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), seeking revenge, became a skilled demon hunter and raised his sons to follow in his footsteps."

"Fans and stars of defunct TV shows "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Firefly" participated in a rally to support striking Hollywood writers.

All three shows, which still have huge followings, were created by Joss Whedon and were lauded during their runs for the quality of their writing."

Jericho: Moonves,Firefly, and Supernatural

"CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves is hopeful but not terribly optimistic about an end to the Hollywood writers strike. He still believes in CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric. And--despite the medium's critics--he's bullish on network television.

Moonves took the stage Monday to discuss these and other topics over lunch at UBS' (nyse: UBS - news - people ) Global Media & Communications Conference."

Supernatural Magazine

"Next Tuesday, November 27th the first issue of the official SUPERNATURAL Magazine goes on sale. Some of us bloggers have been lucky enough to get a preview of the magazine but sadly I can’t post the pages we received as previews. They were review only, sorry gang.

I can however tell you that the pages I saw were incredibly well designed, dark, and befitting the macabre that is Supernatural. It’s kind of like a really well produced DIY Zine, and that’s a good thing."

Strike Talks Resume

"In the first sign of optimism since the writers' strike began Nov. 5, the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers mutually agreed to resume formal talks Monday, Nov. 26.

The WGA will, however, continue to picket next week.

That is of interest because when talks broke down the night before the strike began, it was because the AMPTP did not want to continue talks once the WGA East went on strike at midnight Eastern time.

Whatever the case, the announcement will come as a pleasant pre-Thanksgiving surprise for what had become an entirely pessimistic television industry."

What The Networks Claim

"So, if, as the networks claim, downloading and streaming episodes online amounts to promotional activity (which is why they're saying they shouldn't have to give the writers a percentage of the profits), then:

1) it shouldn't be illegal to download from free sources (because it's just a commercial, after all),

2) why are they being paid by advertisers to air their ads during streaming episodes, and

3) we who have paid to download episodes legally should demand a refund. No one should have to pay to download a commercial."

"Just got word that Supernatural is launching an official magazine.

The first issue will have interviews with Eric Kripke, Kim Manners, Alona Tal, and Katie Cassidy, as well as a story about creating the effects for the series.

Interestingly, the issue will feature 2 different covers - one for the newstand and one for specialist comic shops."

Here’s some odds and ends from strike news.

"CBS news writers, who have been working under an expired contract for the past two years, are threatening to join their WGA brethren (and low-level tv bloggers) and go on strike before week’s end. “About 500 unionized news writers could soon join their creative colleagues on the picket line”, reports HuffPo.

In response, CBS released a statement saying they are “prepared for the possibility of a writers strike [and] will continue to produce quality news programming.”

Extraordinary Heroes

"If you have missed "Heroes," the NBC Monday-night series about a group of people with extraordinary capabilities, then you have missed everything, which is to say, you have missed a show that exempts almost no subject of current political or social fascination from the roster of its interests.

More than a quarter of the way into the second season, the ratings have slipped somewhat, but it remains the most engaged drama on television at the moment, a big hand with fingers dangling in every pot."

"Variety reports that Supernatural picked up its best ratings of the year, both overall and in the 18-34 group.

And just in case you - somehow - missed it, there's a Hollywood writer's strike going on. Several sources have said that most shows have stockpiled enough scripts to finish out the season. Firefox news posted a link to an article in the LA Times saying that Supernatural only has about 10-12 finished scripts, with 5 more roughly finished."

"Miss “Veronica Mars,” Kristen Bell, will be lending her talents to Ubisoft’s upcoming historical-fantasy game, “Assassin’s Creed.”

Jericho and Supernatural

I have found Supernatural fans who are also Jericho fans and the idea was hatched to do some cross-promoting. First, what exactly is this show about and why didn't I watch it from the beginning?

"Supernatural is an American paranormal drama television series, filmed in Canada, that debuted on September 13, 2005 on the WB, and is now part of The CW's lineup, where the second season premiered on September 28, 2006, and the third season premiered on October 4, 2007.

The show follows brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, who travel across the country in a black 1967 Chevy Impala investigating and combatting paranormal events and other unexplained occurrences, many of them based on American urban legends and folklore as well as classic supernatural creatures such as vampires, werewolves, and ghosts."
