"The Writers Guild of America abruptly scrapped a controversial event it had planned in New York next week targeting investors of CBS Corp., one of the media companies with which it is in contract talks.

The guild had invited dozens of Wall Street analysts to a one-hour presentation Tuesday on how the 3-month-old writers strike has negatively affected the television networks and CBS in particular.

The unusual event was part of a strategy to pressure conglomerates through their shareholders to reach a deal with writers. But it prompted an angry response from some executives whose studios are in talks with the writers.

As of early Wednesday, several analysts contacted by The Times said they were planning to attend the session. By late afternoon, however, guild leaders had decided to pull the plug, according to two people close to the matter. Guild officials declined to comment."

"In Monday's episode of As the Strike Turns, soap opera stars joined WGA members on the picket lines.

Meanwhile, the producers main trade group railed against the economic impact of the writers strike action, which entered its seventh week.

"The below-the-line workers whose families depend entirely on our industry have already lost more than $200 million in the Los Angeles area alone, and the health-care benefits for many of these families are now in real jeopardy because of the WGA strike," the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers said in a statement posted on the organization's Web site."

" With both sides back at the barricades, many believe the writers strike won't be resolved until March at the earliest.

Optimism for a quick resolution as negotiations resume Tuesday has faded to nearly nonexistent. In the aftermath of last week's lifting of the news blackout about the talks, each side played the blame game and stressed how insulted it's been by the other's recent conduct.

The WGA has eased up on its hardline stance in one area -- it granted a waiver for writing on Sunday night's telecast of the Kennedy Center Honors. Although the guild has said previously it was mulling such actions, the program represented the first reported instance of a guild waiver since the strike began Nov. 5."
