BlogStraightTalk

Blog StraightTalk On Bumpzee
Next Mon. (Aug. 6)
"BlogStraightTalk is a weekly discussion on the best and worst of blogging content practices, presented in a contrarian format (eg. Ebert & Roper or Kornheiser & Wilbon).

We'll alternate the discussion between best/worst concepts and blogs (or social media) reviews. The basic concept is to open up a discussion among experienced bloggers while allowing those who are newer to social media to gain insights into content development.

Anyone can join as a member of the community and participate in the discussion. Members who have established blogs (with at least 10 posts that positively contribute to the development of social media) may be added to the blog roll."
They let me join so come on. Let's have a full house.

"Meanwhile, CBS television is still among the ratings leaders because of stalwarts "Survivor" and the "CSI" franchise, but the network's ratings have declined in recent months. The unit had a misstep earlier in the quarter, when fans angrily reacted to its decision to pull the series "Jericho," prompting the company to reinstate the show."

Jericho and The Universe

Please join me if you're on MySpace.

Yesterday, Rich at Copywrite Ink "launched an unofficial Expanded Universe Short Story Competition fan fiction contest to promote Jericho for the fans, expand its universe (outside of the town where it largely takes place on television), and demonstrate the possibilities of its rich story line."

In today's blog, " Writing Fan Fiction: Richard Becker", Rich writes his own story. It can't be submitted to the contest and that's a good thing. Why? Because it is a great story. You did well, Rich.

Jericho Ratings and Contest

Fri. night ratings:
CBS won the 8 p.m. slot with "Ghost Whisperer," 3.6/8.
NBC's "1 vs. 100" was second at 3.2/7.
"Set for Life," 2.6/5, put ABC in third,
The second hour of "Smackdown!," 2.8/5, tied NBC's "Las Vegas" for the lead at 9 p.m. A "Jericho" rerun on CBS drew a 2.5/5.

CBS continues to surprise me. I went to the Jericho message board today & what do I see but more new things? You can now get a Jericho widget for your blog/website. I love that.
There's been a Chat added also. You've just got to see for yourself.

What makes me really happy is that they've added my blog, JerichoMonster, to the front page along with other great links.

The Salty Scoop (Production blog) has posted teaser images from some of the new and improved Season Two sets of Jericho.
Plus, every Friday, there will be Friday Rerun Trivia. Answer on Monday.

Thanks to Rich at Copywrite Ink for this:

Jericho Coalition Fan Club Development

This is an invitation to all members of all the Jericho forums to participate in the building of a "fan club" as you, the fans, want.

The general concept behind all this is: everyone has a say.

To summarize:

1. Each forum has selected 5-10 members to represent the forum's membership.

Those forums are:

* CBS
* Jericho Rally Point (JRP)
* Radio Free Jericho (RFJ)
* Nuts For Jericho (NFJ)
* Internet Movie Database (IMDB)

2. At each forum, all questions regarding a fan club will be posted and comments from the members will be collected by the reps of that forum and taken to the Jericho Coalition board.
The Coalition is not the Fan Club. Only the reps will be registered but anyone may view the discussions going on at any time.

3. Jericho Coalition is a site set up for the reps to meet, post the questions and feedback from the fans and then discuss each question in detail. This will allow the input from all the fans to be heard through their representatives via their message boards. Obviously, if you are a member of more than one board – you have multiple opportunities to make your opinions known.

4. After everyone’s input, and discussion, the reps will vote and the final tally will be reported. Eventually a board of directors and officers will be selected from the representatives by either the representatives or by the individual board memberships.

5. This process is repeated until all questions from you, the fans, are answered satisfactorily and decided on, a Board of Directors elected and fan club finalized.

The entire purpose of this is to have you, the fans, be a part of a great thing. We all worked together to bring Jericho back, and we can all work together to build a fan club, for and by everyone.

The links to all the forums are as follows:

CBS
JRP
RFJ
NFJ

IMDB

Right now we are looking for initial questions as to how fans would like to see the Fan Club structured. The idea is to get all the questions out there and answered as best as possible so the brainstorming fun can start right away.

Going in we want everyone at peace with any lingering intitial questions or confusions so we can start rolling out the great ideas from everyone here as soon as possible.

To many of us this is new, but we are all fans and this is a wonderful opportunity to have our voices heard in the Development of a Fan Club, being developed for us, and by us for a show we all truly have a passion for.

Take some time over the weekend and google some fan club sites, surf around and take in of some things that you might like to see in this club. (no, I am not suggesting copyright infringement). Just see what these clubs offer their fans/members that pop up to you as being different, inviting, or even just "hey that's interesting". Think how any of these things might work in a fan made Jericho Fan Club. See something great, save the link, we'll all want to take a look and enjoy the idea with you.

Dues, Merchandise and Promotion are the main topic threads we'll be starting in order to solicit ideas from all over this board and we truly hope everyone loads us up with whatever they choose to throw out there.

Do you want to pay dues? Have both free and paying memberships? Would you want Jericho merchandise available for sale? How do you think the club should be promoted?

Let us know all your ideas and suggestions. They're all important.

A Message From Nina Tassler

Received today on CBS board:

Dear Jericho Fans:

I have some good news to share, which is due in large part to your aggressive and effective outreach on behalf of “Jericho.”

Although the ratings for the repeat episodes on the Network have been modest (not uncommon for the Summer), our preliminary research indicates that 23% of the viewers tuning in did not previously watch the show. This adds up to more than two million new viewers for "Jericho."

Just as encouraging, this research shows that one million viewers who left the show after the mid-season hiatus have returned this summer to catch up on the episodes they missed.

We still have a LONG way to go. But, I wanted to share this news and express our continued appreciation for your support of "Jericho." You have quickly and firmly established "Jericho" as the show with the most passionate and vocal fan community on television. Please keep spreading the word.

Sincerely,

Nina Tassler

President, CBS Entertainment

Jericho, Cookbooks, and Pirates

Jericho Cooks:
Food For a Post-Apocalyptic World was inspired by the CBS TV show, Jericho. It will be a compilation of simple and survivalist recipes collected from Jericho fans. We are actively seeking recipes for the cookbook.

Jericho, Water Bottles, and More

New from CBS:

Jericho: The Real Salty Scoop

It's the first official Jericho Blog hosted by your Producers, Writers and Cast. This will give the greatest fans in TV history a behind-the-scenes look into Jericho and the Jericho production process. We will blog about our days on set, plans for season 2, fun stories from the backlot, links to our favorite websites and upcoming events.

Pictures and videos will be attached so you can take a look at what we are up to on a daily basis. We will even blog from Comic-con on our mobile phones. And this is just the beginning.

CBS.com has so much more in store for Jericho Season 2. So enjoy this feature because you deserve it... as Jeff Braverman says - it sometimes takes twenty tons of peanuts to get the job done. You did it.

Much love,

Carol Barbee, Karim Zreik and Dan Shotz

Have you heard the Water Bottle Story? Check it out. Photos too.

Esai Morales will take a recurring role on CBS' resurrected midseason drama "Jericho."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Morales has contracted for six of this season's scheduled seven episodes of "Jericho."

Morales will be playing a career military officer who hasn't heard from his wife since the nuclear attacks that started the show's first season. The trade paper offers no explanation for how Morales' Col. Hoffman will tie into the lives of the struggling community of Jericho.

Jericho: Second Season Filming

According to the producers who were on Shaun's show last Friday there will be a lot of press on the set of Jericho starting today during the first day of shooting. He mentioned Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, and Access Hollywood. So, it may be a good idea to check your local listings for these shows to check for Jericho coverage. I will also be keeping a list here of all articles/blogs, etc. I will add more as they come in but here's one you don't want to miss:

"TV Measurement Comes Up Short
Most Agree the Payment Model Is Broken; They Just Differ on How to Fix It"
By Brian Steinberg
AdAge: July 23, 2007

Talks about how Jericho was canceled because CBS had not realized how many people were watching on the Web and on DVR's.

Here's an interesting quote:
"What galls him (Leslie Moonves) is that those audiences aren't helping networks as much as their executives might like. "Jericho" fans need to "show up on the television," Mr. Moonves scolded. "That's how we get paid."
Well, well, Mr. Moonves. We are here but we aren't being counted!

Behaviors Changing Online

In an article titled "Analyzing Customer Data
Changing Behaviors Online" Jason Burby explains how the Web is changing and how individuals use of the Web has changed significantly. He states that people don't research our products, services, or offerings on just our site. They're also using sites like eBay, CNet, Epinions, blogs, news articles, and more.

" People also form opinions through other brand experiences, conversations, and friends. Again, these experiences can occur online on sites such as YouTube, over blogs, through conversations, and so on. The way people research, create perceptions, and make decisions continues to evolve."

He also states that "Just over the past 24 months, increasingly more people have began to use blogs as information sources. Companies are trying to figure out how to leverage these changing behaviors and to use sites like YouTube to influence customers."
Burby says we have to "understand how they use our sites in conjunction with other sites and interactions, both online and off-. We must better understand our customers, what they think, why they make decisions, who their influencers are, and how best to communicate with them."

Social Network Advertising

In an article "Advertising on Social Networks: The Third Wave" by Gary Stein he quotes eMarketer as stating that "ad spending on social networking is a boom industry. It's set to grow, in the U.S. alone, from $900 million this year to $2.5 billion by 2011".

He uses Facebook as an example. Facebook began as a community of college students but is now open to everyone. When that happened Stein quotes comScore as saying
"membership leapt from 14 million users to 26.6 million users".

He also states that people spend an average of 186 minutes on the site, per visit. "For a quick comparison, "The Godfather" was only 175 minutes long. These people are involved with this site in a significant way."

Be sure to read the article for more information.

Online Identity Calculator

Thanks to Rich at Copywrite Ink for an excellent article yesterday. It is titled " Calculating Identity:Career Distinction". In the article he mentions the Online Identity Calculator. This was so interesting that I decided to investigate. With this tool you can learn your Google Quotient.

More and more people are applying for jobs online. Employers can now check up on you by looking at social and professional networks and even blogs. It used to be that a brand was a corporation like GE or RCA. Today, though, it has become necessary to think of ourselves as a business. We need a personal brand- something we're known for and we can create that brand identity online.

The Calculator comes from the book Career Distinction: Stand Out By Building Your Brand by William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson. Here is where you can find more information.

How Blogs Are Changing
The Recruiting Landscape

Develop a Personal Brand to Minimize Job Search Woes

Are you Digitally Distinct, Digitally Disastrous, or somewhere in between? Interesting way here to find out.

Typo Generator

I got an interesting email from Jayde today:

"Targeting the proper MISSPELLED keywords is another strategy that can ensure search engine success. Correctly targeting these words can work wonders for online campaigns because not every search engine user is a good speller. With that in mind, we have just the tool for you called the Typo Generator.

Simply enter the keyword(s) you currently target, select the style of misspelling desired and the tool does the rest by returning a list of incorrect keywords you should consider focusing on."

I hadn't really thought much about this until I got the email. I think you'll also find it of interest.

Link Popularity and Page Rank

Bill Platt has written a great article about called The Roller Coaster of Link Popularity. I read messages every day about people who want it but don't know how to get it. Bill explains that
link popularity is basically a count of how many web pages point to one of your web pages.

Often associated with link popularity is Page Rank. People are confused about this one too. Page Rank is the value Google gives to every web page on the Net.
Bill lists 12 possible rankings although I won't mention them all here.

"PageRank (PR) is a Google tool that expands on the simplest link popularity calculation. PageRank is a value given to every web page on the Internet, with 12 possible rankings." Here's an example:
PR0 means the page has been added to Google's database but the page has no rank. To get ranked you need pages of higher PR linked to it.

Read the article to learn more about links, traffic, and PR. Bill also discusses
"the inner-workings of what is happening to their link popularity and search engine placements."
Be sure to read his take on Press Releases, article marketing, and Google's Main Index and Supplemental Listings. I found the article to be quite informative.

Announcement Of New Blog

I would like to introduce you to my new blog. It will be about advertising and marketing issues that we read about every day. Here's something I found that caught my eye:

"If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying, "Circus is coming to Fairgrounds Sunday," that's Advertising. If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk him through town, that's a Promotion. If the elephant walks through the Mayor's flower bed, that's Publicity. If you can get the Mayor to laugh about it, that's Public Relations. And, if you planned the whole thing, that's Marketing!" --Author Unknown ( From The Definition of Marketing by Tiffany Washko).

This blog will mainly cover the advertising and marketing news as it pertains to New Media, entertainment, television, and Social Networking. Along the way I may pass along something that touches on a different area. I hope you'll bear with me as I get this blog started.
