Firefly, Dollhouse, and Whedon

"Joss Whedon, the creator of acclaimed cult favorites "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Firefly," is returning to Fox and reuniting with "Buffy" regular Eliza Dushku for a new action-drama called "Dollhouse."

Fox has given a seven-episode commitment to the 20th Century Fox Television project for a planned debut next year.

"It deals with our darkest impulses and our best ones," Whedon says. "It deals with all the things I like to deal with—strength, weakness, power and corruption."

"Halloween in Hollywood was all tricks and no treats as the final seconds of the Writers Guild of America contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers ticked by last night.

Despite a second day of federal mediation, recriminations flew on both sides as writers and producers remained at loggerheads with no new negotiations scheduled. Talks have centered on the issue of how writers will be paid for work delivered digitally, a thorny issue that's become the single fly in the ointment barring an agreement."

"Now that the hide-and-seek strike game has gotten to the "ready or not, here I come" stage, the broadcast networks are facing the imminent work stoppage by writers in different shapes and different degrees of preparedness.

With only 15 hours of primetime to program, Fox has a built-in advantage in case of a prolonged strike. Add to that the January return of "American Idol," which can go on as many as three nights a week, and Fox looks as strike-proof as one can be."
